Distillation is the process of separating more than one substance by condensation and vaporization. There are many processes and industries that require distillation such as those referred to in the Refinery section.

The distillation process begins with the fermenting of raw materials such as sugar, grains and fruits that have been ground into mash. During the fermentation process a yeast or bacteria is introduced. The media is usually stored for a period of time to allow the mash’s sugars to convert into ethyl alcohol. This alcohol is sent to the distillation column or pots where the vaporization process occurs. The alcohol, or wash, is heated. There are two common methods; one is a pot still where a single batch of wash is directly heated and a batch of distilled alcohol is created. The other is a distillation column where the alcohol is cycled and heated continuously using steam as the agent to release vapors and remove impurities. These purified alcohol vapors are then allowed to condense into (nearly) pure ethyl alcohol, then diluted with water to decrease proof.

As distilleries modernize to increase production, quality piping components are a major requirement. Moving the molasses, or other raw materials, from the port to the storage tanks require pumps and piping appropriate for these high viscosity products. Boilers for cooking the raw product must be fired with gas or oil. Distillery towers must be plumbed with high pressure stainless steel tubing. Final products must be filtered and pumped into storage tanks, oak casks and eventually into bottles for distribution. Waste products must be disposed of in an ecologically conscious manner. A modern distillery is often dwarfed by the water treatment plant required to process the waste left over after all of the yeast that turned the sugars into alcohol are consumed. Waste water may contain the aforementioned remnants from the distilling process. TThey may contain metals or excess nutrients, all of which can be harmful to the environment.

Throughout the entire process many piping systems are required to be built and maintained. Traeger Brothers is pleased to supply a significant portion of the required products. Boiler feed oil or gas requires pumps, piping, valves and pressure regulators to operate efficiently. Feed water and waste water must be sourced and filtered, requiring reverse osmosis membranes and pumps. Instrumentation tubing, gauges and control equipment help automate the process.
