The Challenge:

The plant historically used manual PVC plastic ball valves that continually required maintenance and frequently failed. The client required an automated positive isolation valve with zero leakage inline as well as zero stem seal leakage of the harsh hypochlorite solution. The valves were in a remote part of the power generation facility and lacked an air supply to power a traditional air-to-open/spring-to-close actuator. Client needed the packages on site for a scheduled outage in four weeks.

This valve is used for chemical injection of the raw cooling water to prevent algae build up inside of the piping system.

The Solution:

Supply a package containing an A-T Controls 90 Series Hastelloy C Ball Valve with Teflon seats and an Electric Fail-Safe Actuator. The 90 Series Hastelloy C Ball Valve with Teflon seats was selected for its ability to hold up in a harsh chlorine environment. A 120 Volt Electric Fail-Safe Actuator with a Spring Return was chosen to enable the valve to fail close on loss of power or signal. A-T Controls stocks carbon, stainless, and specialty alloy ball valves at their facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their standard valves are tested in accordance with API 598 for bubble tight inline shut-off and their patented pyramidal stem seal is certified to meet API 641 fugitive emissions requirements. We were able to assemble, test and deliver the valve packages to the job site in time to complete the scheduled shut down.
